Missed-Call Text Back: Questions and Answers
Straight answers about automated text back, pricing, setup, carrier registration and how Alterwyn works for local service businesses.
What is missed-call text back?
Missed-call text back is an automation that sends a text message to anyone who calls your business and doesn't reach you. Within seconds of the missed call, the caller gets a friendly message from your business number asking how you can help, so the conversation keeps going by text instead of ending at voicemail. Read the full guide.
How does missed-call text back work?
When a call to your business number goes unanswered, the system detects the missed call and immediately texts the caller a message you've approved. When they reply, you get a notification on your phone with their number and message, and the lead is saved in a simple CRM so you can text back, call, or book the job.
Do I have to change my business phone number?
In most cases, no. Alterwyn works with your existing business number, either through call forwarding or by enabling texting on your current number, depending on your phone carrier. Your number stays yours.
How much does missed-call text back cost?
Alterwyn's Essential plan is $49 a month plus a one-time $100 setup fee. The Growth plan, which adds lead follow-up, Google review requests, appointment reminders and reactivation campaigns, is $99 a month plus a one-time $149 setup fee. Additional SMS, phone and third-party usage charges may apply depending on volume. See pricing.
How long does setup take?
Configuration usually takes a few days. Business texting in the US must be registered with the carriers (called A2P 10DLC), and that approval can take one to three weeks. We handle the registration for you.
What is A2P 10DLC and why does it matter?
A2P 10DLC is the US carrier registration system for businesses that send text messages from a standard 10-digit phone number. Registered numbers are far less likely to have messages filtered or blocked. Alterwyn completes this registration as part of setup.
Is it legal to automatically text people who called my business?
Replying by text to someone who just called you about a job is generally treated as responding to an inquiry, but rules vary and marketing messages have stricter consent requirements. Every message we set up identifies your business and honors STOP requests. This isn't legal advice; talk to your attorney if you have specific questions.
Can I write my own text messages?
Yes. We write the messages with you so they sound like your business, and you approve them before anything goes live. You can change them any time.
What kinds of businesses use missed-call text back?
Any business where customers call to book work and the owner or team is often busy: plumbers, HVAC companies, roofers, electricians, landscapers, cleaning businesses, auto detailers and other home service companies.
Is missed-call text back better than voicemail?
Many callers hang up instead of leaving a voicemail and simply call the next business. A text arrives right away and lets the customer explain what they need on their own time, which keeps the conversation with you instead of a competitor.
Do I need to learn new software?
Not much. Leads and replies come straight to your phone, and we show you the simple dashboard during setup. Alterwyn is fully managed, so we handle configuration and ongoing maintenance.
Can Alterwyn also ask customers for Google reviews?
Yes. On the Growth plan, Alterwyn can automatically send review requests after a job is finished, with a direct link to your Google review page, so happy customers are asked at the right moment.
Is there a contract? What happens if I cancel?
Plans renew monthly, with a one-time setup fee at signup. If you cancel, your automations stop at the end of your billing period and your business phone number stays yours. We can export your contacts and conversation history on request.
